to the japanese, few musicians are bigger than ryuichi sakamoto. to the rest of the world, ryuichi sakamoto is arguably the most internationally renowned japanese musician since toru takemitsu. most often identified in the west as either a film composer or a pop musician, ryuichi sakamoto's prolific career extends nearly three decades to include work as a producer, composer, musician, publisher, writer, film-maker, actor, model, and activist.
as a grammy and academy award winning film composer, ryuichi sakamoto has collaborated with such acclaimed directors as nagisa oshima on merry christmas, mr. lawrence and gohatto (taboo); bernardo bertolucci on the last emperor, the sheltering sky, and little buddha; pedro almodovar on tacones lejanos (high heels); oliver stone on wild palms; and brain de palma on snake eyes and femme fatale. in addition to his role as a film composer, ryuichi sakamoto also co-starred in merry christmas, mr. lawrence with david bowie and "beat" takeshi kintano, and in the last emperor with john lone and joan chen. beyond film, ryuichi sakamoto was commissioned to compose the original music for the opening ceremonies of the 1992 olympic games in barcelona, and his music can be heard in television shows, commericials, and video games as well.
ryuichi sakamoto first achieved international fame in 1977 as a member of the enormously successful techno pop trio yellow magic orchestra, who are often characterized by western critics as japan's answer to germany's kraftwerk. when y.m.o. disbanded in 1983, ryuichi sakamoto pursued a dual career as a film composer and a solo recording artist. from 1997 through 2000, ryuichi sakamoto devoted much of his musical energies to his lifelong interest in classical music, releasing his first symphony, solo piano album, and opera. in 2001, ryuichi sakamoto formed the bossa nova trio morelenbaum²/sakamoto with jaques and puala morelenbuam as a tribute to the late brazilian songwriter antonio carlos jobim.
